Intensive Review of Psychiatric Diagnostic Interviewing, Formulation, & Treatment Planning

Intended Audience: Psychiatrists

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Employ techniques for establishing rapport with patients.
2. Detect subtle abnormalities on mental status examination.
3. Apply interview note-taking techniques that permit effective organization of interview data.
4. Critique examples of psychiatric diagnostic interviews and presentations.
5. Conduct psychiatric diagnostic interviews with and develop formulations and treatment plans for persons with a wide range of psychiatric disorders.
6. Clinically assess suicide and homicide risk.
7. Evaluate cognitive function.
8. Maintain interview control and guidance over disruptive patient behaviors.
9. Present comprehensive and organized
      a) case synopses,
      b) biopsychosocial formulations,
      c) differential diagnoses,
      d) prognostic indicators, and
      e) paired problem – treatment intervention lists.
10. Review the major concepts of psychiatric diagnoses, assessments, and treatment approaches.
